After the 1 year anniversary of Katrina, now we have the 9/11 5-year anniversary. It is already making the headlines.
Even in France, it is everywhere, including on television. This week alone, there are four documentaries on the topic of 9/11, including two on prime time and one on public television. It is a reminder that the attack of September 2001 has been the most covered live-event in our history.
It is not the number of dead people that was the most impressive, it was the fact it was live on TV and that for a little while, when we didn't know what was going on and heard rumors, there was a sense that the world was coming to an end.
It was certainly a defining moment in our history and in our personal life, especially in America. I bet each and every one of us knows exactly where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news. In effect, the world as we knew it has certainly come to an end but in a different way than we might have expected that day.
So what to make of it 5 years later? Do we still feel emotional about those pictures after watching the same stuff a million times? Have we gotten accustomed to the horror? Should we? After all, there is worse horror in the world, on an everyday basis. What is the decent thing to do now that the issue has been so politicized and that the country is more divied than ever?
Still, even today, watching those people jump off the towers continues to give me goose-pimple and make me shiver.
