Katrina's Impact.

I'm watching CNN right now and can't believe the scope of the devastation in New-Orleans and Biloxi. When the Hurricane was downgraded to category 4 and then 3, I thought they were off the hook, but that was clearly gross underestimate. The most amazing part is that things are still only getting worse - the flooding, the looting, and the appearant helplessness of the authorities. It is amazing when you think this is more or less a predictible disaster AND this is also the richest country in the world. I'm not sure anything could have been done differently.

Things to do differently...
don't build cities in flood plains.
don't make it worse by trying to guide the water where you think it should go (it ends up destroying natural buffers, like swamps and marshes).
don't assume money and technology can by you a way out of everything (it usually creates more problems then it solves).
make sure you look out for others (getting people without the means out of harms way - beforehand).
shoot looters (well maybe not. but, damn, that's a lot of nerve to steal in the midst of a natural disaster).

only in the good ol usa, 'the richest country in the world'.

I've been unable to follow this disaster closely, but from what I understand the damage is coming mostly from the flood waters rushing in through the breeched levy. FEMA doesn't seem to have been very well-prepared for all these contingencies. And now you've got the former head of FEMA saying the same thing. This thing just grows worse by the day.
