David Brooks over at the NY Times is often times right on the money and the rest of the time he tends to come off as hopelessly naive. Either way, he's still one of my favorite conservative commentators, mostly because he has a true appreciation for humor. At any rate,
his piece in today's Times is definitely right on the money.
Civic arrangements work or they fail. Leaders are found worthy or wanting. What's happening in New Orleans and Mississippi today is a human tragedy. But take a close look at the people you see wandering, devastated, around New Orleans: they are predominantly black and poor. The political disturbances are still to come.
There is coming together in a crisis and afterward there is holding those responsible whose policies did nothing to prevent this chaos.

I think the official response from FEMA on down is summed up by this exchange,
Tourist Debbie Durso of Washington, Mich., said she asked a police officer for assistance and his response was, "'Go to hell - it's every man for himself.'"(AP)
Oh, and gas is up to $3.00. Which prompted Bush to say, "Don't buy gas if you don't need it." Duh.
